In-class essay writing can be a weak spot for good reason: we don't know what to expect, we don't have as much time to prepare, and we're put on the spot.
Here's a preview of some of the strategies I coach my students on:
Practice before the exam
Take a deep breath
Jot down some notes on the test to help you remember your ideas
Mark up the prompt by circling key words
Ask clarifying questions if needed
Plan your essay and write your thesis
Watch the time
Double space so you have room to add words or ideas
Proofread
